About Mike
Every story deserves an honest voice.
That's the principle I bring to every audiobook I narrate. Whether it's an epic fantasy spanning continents, an intimate literary novel, or a fast-paced thriller, my aim is always the same: to create performances that feel truthful to the characters, faithful to the author, and immersive for the listener. The author's words do the heavy lifting. My job is to give them an honest voice.
I'm a British audiobook narrator and voice actor based in Hampshire, England. My path into narration wasn't a conventional one. Before stepping behind the microphone professionally, I spent years working in construction before moving into digital project management. Later, while renovating our home and becoming the primary carer for our growing family, I finally had the opportunity to devote myself fully to the work I'd always wanted to pursue: bringing stories to life through performance.
Every character has their own history, motivations and way of seeing the world. My job is to discover that voice and let it feel authentic on the page. Whether I'm voicing a world-weary king, an awkward teenager discovering magic for the first time, or a villain who genuinely believes they're doing the right thing, I approach each performance with the same goal: to create characters that listeners believe in rather than simply recognise.
Character differentiation sits at the heart of my work. I enjoy creating conversations that feel effortless to follow, allowing listeners to know who's speaking through performance and personality rather than exaggerated voices. My natural speaking voice is warm, authoritative and well suited to adult narration, comfortably covering characters from young adults through to the elderly.
Alongside my native British RP accent, I'm comfortable performing Cockney, Northern English, Scottish, Southern Irish, South African, Australian and French accents, allowing me to create distinctive, believable characters while always serving the story first.
Although my work has included young adult, fantasy, science fiction, horror, literary fiction and thrillers, fantasy is where I feel most at home. Growing up immersed in the worlds of Robert Jordan, Philip Pullman and Brian Jacques, and later discovering Brandon Sanderson, Patrick Rothfuss, Brent Weeks, Peter V. Brett, Christian Jacq and Evan Winter, gave me an appreciation for rich worldbuilding and unforgettable characters. Truthfully however, I love narrating any well written story.
To date, I've narrated titles for both independent authors and publishers, recording from my purpose-built home studio and delivering either publish ready, mastered audio or raw recordings to suit each project's requirements. One project that's especially close to my heart is Everything Was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt by Ben Reeves. It was a privilege to help bring Ben's story to listeners, and seeing the novel become an instant New York Times bestseller made the experience all the more rewarding.
Away from the microphone, I'm usually spending time with my family, playing guitar, getting thoroughly outplayed at chess, or wandering through woodland in search of edible plants and mushrooms. I also enjoy designing and building things, which recently led me to construct my own permanent recording booth, a project that perfectly combined practical problem solving with my commitment to producing the highest quality recordings possible.
Whether I'm narrating a debut novel or the latest instalment in a long-running series, I never lose sight of the trust an author places in their narrator. It's a privilege I don't take lightly, and one I approach with the same care, curiosity and respect every time I step into the booth. The author's words do the heavy lifting.
